The Night We Never Kissed

(Lyrics)
The Story
This song was supposed to be a joke. A romantic song about romantic failure. But, by the time I was done, it was a song about my romantic failure.

I've had tons of friend-girls, but I've never had a girlfriend. Sad eh? One of my failings, and something I'm working on. I've always been this way, but the events of "The Alligator Song" sure didn't help.

The song isn't about anyone specific. In fact, I'd never had a thing for anyone with green eyes when I wrote it. But it is about a pattern of being attracted to friend-girls, and doing nothing about it. (In some cases, it had been made amply clear that it would not be welcome.)

If I ever complete it, my country song, "Friends who Just Want To Be Friends" will tread perilously similar ground. Which is one of the reasons I haven't completed it yet.

The Song
This was a very early song, and it shows in my simple chord structures. Also in the regularity of the rhyme scheme. Note that I stole at least one of the rhymes ("mist" and "kissed") from Kiss of the Spider Woman, an act no one could be proud of, since its rhymes were pronounced "cat-in-the-hat-ish" by my drama class of the time.

It's an early slow song with no chorus, as is "Time to Sleep".
