Works Department

Lyrics
Verse 1
Just between a dumpster and a meat-packing plant,
There's a hole that stinks so much that you can't smell a rat.
I'm slim and still I barely fit into this dank manhole.
And fixing sewers is a job that takes a heavy toll.
Verse 2
My job will take me anywhere where there's a nasty smell.
I'm proving Dante wrong-- I've found a tenth circle of Hell.
The day I took this job, I think I should have stayed in bed.
These days, I fall asleep before the pillow hits my head.
Chorus (repeat)
I'm working in
The Works Department of the city.
I'm slacking in
The Works Department of the city.
I must be pretty dumb.
I think I'd rather be a bum
Than be here in the Works Department of the city.
Verse 3
The loads and strains, the sounds and stenches are most of my life.
I've got no kids, 'cause I'm half-dead when I get to my wife.
I pay the bills, the food and mortgage out here in this din.
When I get home, she acts as though I'm what the cat dragged in!
Chorus (repeat)
I'm working in
The Works Department of the city.
I'm slacking in
The Works Department of the city.
I must be pretty dumb.
I think I'd rather be a bum
Than be here in the Works Department of the city.
Verse 4
With every year, our budget shinks. We can't buy lemonade.
I put my friends in stitches when I tell them what I'm paid.
I really wish the voters would let us do our jobs,
But they treat Public Works like it's a welfare scheme for slobs
Chorus (repeat)
I'm working in
The Works Department of the city.
I'm slacking in
The Works Department of the city.
I must be pretty dumb.
I think I'd rather be a bum
Than be here in the Works Department of the city.
Chorus
I'm working in
The Works Department of the city.
I'm slacking in
The Works Department of the city.
I'm slacking in
The Works Department of the city.
